1. New runoff model based on vertical flow

Highlights:
1) Storm runoff response is controlled by the vertical flow system due to a rapid pressure head transmission under wet unsaturated conditions.
2) Flow in preferential paths such as soil pipes and rock fractures play a major role in the downslope flow but further observational studies are strongly needed.
3) Peak runoff can be mitigated by the soil layer thickness and soil physical properties, even during heavy rainfall events.
4) The fact that the Richards equation can simulate runoff responses in catchments does not mean that it is physically correct, requiring further studies.
5) Inconsistency between process complexity and model simplicity in runoff phenomena has roughly been resolved.
